Common Sense Media
All Stanley students have been learning about Digital Citizenship. We are using lessons and discussion prompts from Common Sense Media's K-12 Classroom Curriculum. Common Sense is also a great resource for parents and families navigating our media-rich world.

Mandarin Podcasts
Susan Olson is using podcasts to help students with their Mandarin pronounciation! Check out the attached files in her locker!

Book Trailers
Bev Lathrope's 8th Grade English classes have been producing Book Trailers as part of their independent reading. Visit HERE  to see some great work from over the years.

Pencasts at Stanley
Several Stanley teachers are piloting the use of the Livescribe Echo Smartpen, a cool device that tracks audio as it writes. While we are still exploring the many ways this technology can be utilized, click HERE and HERE to see examples of how two of our Math teachers are using it.

Stanley Athletics

Stanley offers a wide range of opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular athletics, in both highly competitive interschool leagues and skill building intraschool squads. Click HERE  to view the Stanley Athletics website.

Announcements from our Library

ONE BOOK ONE SCHOOL 2012-2013

Stanley’s One Book One School title for this coming school year is Shooting Kabul by N.H. Senzai.  We are excited to announce that ALL Stanley students will be reading this book with their Core/English teachers at the beginning of school.   It is a powerful story about the strong bonds of family and community holding together through a difficult situation told through the eyes of Fadi, a 7thgrade middle school student who is beginning his life in a new school and in a new country.  Offered as a convenient option for you to own your own copy, you can preorder your copy of Shooting Kabuland have it ready for you to pick up at Stanley’s Wildcat Days on August 20.  Simply download a preorder form from the Stanley Library One Book One School web page:

http://sms-lafsd-ca.schoolloop.com/1book1school

and turn in your preorder form to the  school librarian by June 5thwith either cash or a check made out to Real Booksin the amount of $5.60.  Books will also be available for check out in the Stanley library.  We are thrilled to have the whole school reading together! We can’t wait to meet the author this fall as she has tentatively agreed to visit Stanley.  Many thanks for your support as we anticipate this event to be a wonderful kick off for all Stanley students and staff.

Register for a SchoolLoop Account

We were excited to start the new school year with SchoolLoop open and available on the first day. Most returning 7th and 8th graders and their parents already have accounts and can simply log in using the same username and password as last year.

For students new to Stanley, creating an account is simple. When you click on the "Register Now" button on the left side of this screen, you will go to a screen that asks for some important information. Parents will go through a very similar process and need the same basic information as students.

Much of the information requested is obvious, but the first bit requires you to know the student's ID number.  You can find this on the schedule that was distributed on the first day. It is the number listed as "Perm ID#."  It is common to mistake this number for the "Student #" - but use the "Perm ID#"!!!

We also recommend that students have and use their own email accounts when they set up their School Loop account. This is because many teachers use SchoolLoop to create and monitor online classroom discussions, a feature that is only open to students enrolled in their classes.

Once you have an account, we encourage you to browse around the features, see what's happening in your (or your child's) classrooms and get comfortable navigating around the various options available on your "Portal."

We look forward to a great year!  Stay in the Loop!

Coming Soon... the Outdoor Learning Quad

We are pleased to announce that after several years of planning and preparation, our Stanley PTA has voted to move ahead with supporting Stanley’s Outdoor Learning Quad. This is an area in front of the Stanley Library that has been unused for many years, and will now become a place where teachers and students can work in a welcoming, outdoor environment. Our Stanley staff, District leadership, student leadership team, and community partners have collaborated on this project, which is slated to be completed by the first day of school in 2012. For a visual of the OLQ plan, check HERE .
